In League of Legends we have patch 12.18 already, and due to it we check out new statistics about best top laners for now. We also checked their build, spells and runes and we are going to share this information with you. In patch 12.17 we had some buffs and nerfs and other significant changes. Has anything changed as a result for playing on the top? Therefore, we invite you to read – who is the best champion on top?
Best top laners league – only S+ and S tier
In patch 12.18 League of Legends we have only three champions with the best tier S+. With tier S there are seven characters. Here’s what the list of best top laners looks like:
- S+ : Aatrox, Darius, Mordekaiser
- S : Maokai, Shen, Ornn, Olaf, Sett and Camille
The order matters. Besides tier S+ and S we also have A, B, C and D, but for now we will not pay attention to them at all.
Builds, spells and the runes – based on present top laners
Take a look at the best champions on top and check out how to build, what spells are important and what runes to choose.
Aatrox (S+)
Build: Choose Doran’s Shield and Health Potion as starting items. Then, as a mythic and core items buy Plated Steelcaps and Eclipse. Next will be Black Cleaver. As fourth item options you have two best choices – Serylda’s Grudge (Win Ratio 63,57%) or Death’s Dance (WR 60,21%). As fifth item options you have Death’s Dance (63,18%), Serylda’s Grudge (61,54%) or Maw of Malmortius (60, 28%). As sixth item options there are also three items – Guardian Angel (60,03%), Serylda’s Grudge (66,23%) or Maw of Malmortius (61,9%).
Runes: you should choose the runes in this order – Conqueror → Triumph → Legend: Tenacity → Last Stand (Precision) and Second Wind → Revitalize (Resolve). Choose also Diamond → Diamond → Circle
Spells: Flash and Ignite
Skill priority: Q, E, W (order matters)
Darius (S+)
Build: As starting items you should choose Doran’s Blade and a Health Potion. As mythic and core items Plated Steelcaps, then Trinity Force and then Death’s Dance. Fourth item options: Dead Man’s Plate (60,44%) or Force of Nature (57,14%). As fifth item options you have Streak’s Gage (62,65%), Dead Man’s Plate (62,38%) or Force of Nature (60,25%). As sixth item options you can choose Guardian Angel (59,8%), Force of Nature (58,15%) or Streak’s Gage (57,62%).
Runes: order of choosing – Conqueror → Triumph → Legend: Alacrity → Last Stand ( Precision) and Second Wind → Unflinching (Resolve). Next will be → Axe → Diamond → Shield.
Spells: Flash and Ghost
Skill priority: Q, E, W
Mordekaiser (S+)
Build: Choose Doran’s Ring and Health Potions at the beginning. Then, as mythic and core items it will be the Riftmaker, Plated Steelcaps and then Rylai’s Crystal Scepter. As fourth item options you have Demonic Embrance (62,78%) or Zhonya’s Hourglass. As fifth item options it will be the Zhonya’s Hourglass, Spirit Visage or Thornmail. As sixth item options you have three options: Zhonya’s Hourglass (61,1%), Spirit Visage (59,2%) or Thornmail (56,45%).
Runes: Conqueror → Triumph → Legend: Tenacity → Last Stand (Precision). Second Wind → Revitalize (Resolve). Axe → Diamond → Circle.
Spells: Flash and Ignite
Skill priority: Q, E, W.
Maokai (S)
Build: Doran’s Shield and Health Potion at the beginning. Then Plated Steelcaps, Sunfire Aegis and Winter Approach as next. As fourth item options you have Frozen Heart (63,47%) or Thornmail (61,17%). As fifth item options there are Frozen Heart (63,85%), Thornmail (62,85%) or Spirit Visage (62,74%). As sixth item options Demonic Embrance (71,13%), Frozen Heart (69,07%) or Anathema’s Chains (60,23%).
Runes: Grasp of the Undying → Demolish → Second Wind → Overgrowth (Resolve). Biscuit Delivery → Cosmic Insight (Inspiration). Axe → Shield → Heart.
Spells: Flash and Teleport
Skill priority: Q, W, E.
Shen (S)
Build: Doran’s Shield and Health Potion when you start. Then Plated Steelcaps, Frostfire Gauntlet and Titanic Hydra. As fourth item options choose Thornmail (60,76%) or Randuin’s Omen (59,71%). As fifth item options there are Randuin’s Omen, or Thornmail (62,47%) or Force of Nature (61,2%). As sixth item options you can choose Anathema’s Chains (65,96%), Randuin’s Omen (65,48%) or Force of Nature (65%).
Runes: Grasp of the Undying → Shield Bash → Second Wind → Revitalize (Resolve) and Cheap Shot → Ultimate Hunter (Domination). Then Diamond → Diamond → Heart.
Spells: Flash and Teleport

Ornn (S)
Build: You start with Doran’s Shield and Health Potion. Then Sunfire Aegis, Plated Steelcaps and Thornmail as core and mythic items. As fourth item options Frozen Heart (63,73%) or Force of Nature (63.34%). As fifth item options Warmog’s Armor (72,53%), Frozen Heart (68,47%) or Force of Nature (65,87%). As sixth item options Warmog’s Armor (71,52%), Gargoyle Stoneplate (67,32%) or Anathema’s Chains (63,45%).
Runes: Grasp of the Undying → Demolish → Second Wind → Overgrowth (Resolve), Magical Footwear → Biscuit Delivery (Inspiration). Axe → Shield → Shield.
Spells: Flash and Teleport
Skill priority: W, E, Q.
Olaf (S)
Build: Doran’s Blade and Health Potion at the start. Then Stridebreaker, next will be Plated Steelcaps and Death’s Dance. As fourth item options you can choose Maw of Malmortius (61,85%) or Streak’s Gage (61,33%). As fifth item options Streak’s Gage (65,47%), Spirit Visage (60,11%) or Thornmail (58,83%). As sixth item options Blade of the Ruined King (69,01%), Guardian Angel (65,65%) or Spirit Visage (56,88%).
Runes: Conqueror → Triumph → Legend: Alacrity → Last Stand (Precision). Magical Footwear → Approach Velocity (Inspiration). Diamond → Diamond → Circle.

Build: Doran’s Blade and Health Potion. Then Stridebreaker, Plated Steelcaps and Titanic Hydra. As fourth item options Streak’s Gage (61,24%) or Death’s Dance (57,98%). As fifth item options you can choose Streak’s Gage (60,35%), Force of Nature (57,66%) or Death’s Dance (56,56%). As sixth item options Hullbreaker (71, 59%), Streak’s Gage (60,1%) or Death’s Dance (54,48%).

As fifth item options Guardian Angel (64,03%), Death’s Dance (60,29%) or Maw of Malmortius (59,67%). As sixth item options Guardian Angel (61,03%), Maw of Malmortius (60%) or Chempunk Chainsword (58,96%).
